It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of designer and architect Marc Berthier.
Marc Berthier studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and then at l'Ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs.
Throughout his career, Marc Berthier kept his sober and light vision of design at a high standard with a level of creativity and precision rarely matched in this field.
With the arrival of plastic materials in the world of furniture, he designed some of the most iconic and revolutionary pieces of his generation.
In 1965, Marc Berthier designed “Ruches”, the modular shelves in colored plastic, produced in large series by Prisunic.
In 1968, he designed the “Ozoo collection” for Roche Bobois: a particularly innovative line of polyester and fiberglass furniture, which was recently re-edited.
The collaboration between Marc Berthier and Roche Bobois continued in 1970 with the Twenty Tube collection, made of steel tubes in pop colors, canvas and laminate.
Celebrated as the designer of lightness, his creativity has been recognized with numerous awards such as the Grand Prix National de Création Industrielle, two Compasso d'Oro awards, the Gabriel Prize, the Medal of Art and Industry, and the New York Accent Design.
Today, several of his works are exhibited in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (the MoMa) in New York.
Roche Bobois salutes and thanks Marc Berthier for his invaluable support during the first joyful and innovative decade of his work.
