Painter, sculptor and designer Hans Hopfer has been designing sofas since the 1970s, with some of them becoming iconic pieces in the Roche Bobois collections. Sensitive to changing lifestyles and creative space management, he designed seats with fully modular, floor-level units.

In 1971, he created the Mah Jong sofa: a system of cushions that champion complete freedom of form and function. Avant-garde at the time of its creation, it is an iconic piece today. Upholstered in fabrics designed by Kenzo Takada, Missoni and Jean-Paul Gaultier, the Mah Jong has long set the standard for creative modularity.

For the Mah Jong’s upholstery, Roche Bobois has always called on talented designers for unique editions.
This year the cushions of the Mah Jong are dressed with news fabrics designed by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier or Missoni.

Missoni is Italian fashion at its most elegant and exuberant. Their iconic zigzag motifs, refined fabrics, and floral and graphic patterns dress, reveal and energise each Mah Jong cushion.

Free and daring in his approach Kenzo Takada – “the most Parisian of Japanese designers” – has designed exceptional fabric collections to upholster the Mah Jong. His creations reflect the graphic and cultural hallmarks of his style: East meets West, colour mastery, and subtle patterns for ever more original and elegant harmonies.

When Jean Paul Gaultier’s vision meets the creative savoir-faire of Roche Bobois, this gives rise to highly personal interpretations of the Mah Jong.
